2018, 2019: Looking Back and Looking Ahead!

Scottish Soldiers prepare to execute HDMP [Highland Decision Making Process].
Note DMAB [decision making assistance blades] being used to weigh the finer merits of various COA.
Note this is not as preferable as DMAW [Decision Making Assistance Whiskey]

https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2014/04/world-war-i-in-photos-soldiers-and-civilians/507329/

looks like a raucous process but more energizing than contemporary U.S. Army MDMP...

2018 - a lot done, but not all goals accomplished
This was a busy blog in 2018, with 27 posts. January had 7 posts for micro-armor and "Oil Cheaper than Water" alone! The tally is thus:
- Micro Armor / OCtW rules - 15 posts
- Modern Skirmish / Terminator Genisys Rules - 6 posts
- WWII / Up the Blue WWII rules - 3 posts
- Malakand Field Force, Afghanistan 1898 in 54mm - one measly post
- a focus post on 2017 & 2018. Goals in 2018 were:
- to post more [done!]
Modern rules development [done! Oil Cheaper than Water got a bunch of play]
- painting my desert Brits [some progress - got my painting info organized here]
- making more terrain, US WWII, and FFL v. Arabs [zero progress]
came in at the bottom. Some priorities were derailed by spending a bunch of time on Terminator and modern skirmish in the last quarter.

I definitely need to do more 15mm WWII!

2019 Goals. Green are definite, Amber are desirable, Red is Stretch-goal

Up the Blue! WWII & Modern Combat
15mm WWII
British Desert force finished
Finish Up the Blue! draft and force lists for both.
Game Med / desert using Up the Blue! and W:aI WWII modified.
Work on WWII US Force v. Germans for ETO fights

Work on French Foreign Legion v. Arabs using UtB! or W:aI WWII [especially promising].

Captain Escargot v. Mullah Mansef - destined to meet again!

"Oil Cheaper than Water" variant
Work on Syria 2020 1/285 armies
Do new draft from updated UtB rules.

28mm Terminator Genysis Rules
Paint up forces of Endos and Humans...hmm, what have we here?

Game it with Star Wars Figs - ready to go!
Northwest Frontier - paint up basic skirmish force to toy around with
Paint up Taliban & consider Empress US forces
finish 40K Heresy teams

Stay tuned for some rapid progress!

Battleground 2020: Syria, Post 2: schedule & more gear

"If you look on the dry erase board, you can see that they get +2 Dice...1 for being Dug-in, and 1 for Hard cover. We need more than an AAMG for this target!"

Sometimes as work progresses with a project, I realize that some more items are needed to finish the phase of work I'm in. This can be frustrating due to both budgeting constraints and available time, so I always like to work on a couple of items simultaneously - if one experiences a slow-down, then I switch to the other while acquiring the needed items.

Present phases of work:

  1. prepping and priming OPFOR micro armor and infantry.
  2. creating mixed terrain on bases, printing paper terrain, making the buildings.
This happened with the work on the micro armor. The jeweler's saw makes a little bit of additions to the vehicles pretty easy, and commanders, guns, gunners, crew and boxes / bundles on vehicles always makes them a lot more realistic. It also adds depth to the model, making it "pop" to the eye. As I experimented in this post [click] I realized I didn't want to waste a lot of really nice infantry figs as crew - chopping up a few for a trial is fine, but the GHQ figs are too nice to waste. Also, their dynamic poses are harder to work with than more static ones, anyway.

So, I checked GHQ and CinC and found that the latter had some static poses perfect for vehicles - dirt cheap, too [$7 / 36]. Also, shipping is free for orders in the $20-50 range, so it was time to fill in a few other deficiencies as well. In the end, this was the order placed:

OPFOR

* BRDM Spandrel [TOW] [x5] - had no TOW capability, and they're scout cars, too.
* GAZ 66 trucks [x5] - transport for Syrian motor infantry.
* 40 Russian AAMG for Armor - useful for a number of vics, a common upgrade.

USA

* Guided bomb set - for future airplanes, and immediately as markers for IF attacks.
* 50 .50 cal AAMG - both an upgrade and spares for broken barrels, etc.
* US Lt. AA, AT and TOW figs - poses suitable for many crew uses.

TERRAIN

* Wooden span bridge - 2" span, 6" long, seems to have metal rails. Seems like a common 3rd-world or secondary road bridge. Got an extra span to make it cross 4" of water.

I found CinC easy to work with thru their site, and plan to use them in the future, after I see how this order goes. The items look good, altho not all have pics or adequate pics.

For the 2nd bullet, I realized that to create terrain bits that will last, I need to mount them on something sturdy, easy to handle and water-proof [spilled beverages...] so the time and effort spent on terrain isn't wasted when it falls apart with use. Also, painting terrain can make it curve as the paint dries. I therefore ordered .02 / .04 styrene sheets from Hobbylinc, which are on the way.

Also, I want to have groves of trees, whether cultivated or wild. So I ordered trees from China. More will be posted on these when they arrive.

Battleground 2020: Syria, Post 1: Initiating project

Styker BCT staff prepare for their greatest challenge: One-Hour Wargames

https://paxsims.wordpress.com/2014/10/08/augmented-reality-sand-tables/

This will be a project post that I hope will achieve two goals:
  1. Help me to organize, track and push forward with this project, and,
  2. Help experienced or new gamers alike to get ideas on how to choose, track, and progress with a project in a satisfying, responsible way.
Often projects get lost in the sauce of daily living - that's ok, a hobby is _just_ a hobby. But when it gets lost due to another sudden _hobby_ interest, or loses steam, it may be that we aren't being organized about it enough, letting new shiny things grab our attention and distract us from goals. That's not good - it leads to a host of issues:
  • dissipated time, money and effort,
  • spending money on multiple projects that get nowhere,
  • blowing our hobby budget on incomplete projects,
  • lost interest since often we can't play an incomplete project.
I find that posting helps me stay focused, so a big "thank you" to followers and occasional visitors alike!

BLUF
This project looks forwards to a near-future US intervention in the Syrian Civil War [say 2020] with a Stryker Brigade as a Reaction Force moving into theater with all the latest challenges and tech of near-peer decisive action. It features:
  1. working with micro-armor including terrain, manufacturors, etc
  2. resources for contemporary warfare: gadgets, doctrine, uniforms, everything,
  3. new rules for "Oil Cheaper than Water" to reflect contemporary possibilities of near-peer conflict, such as decisive action as opposed to COIN warfare,
WHY?
Every project needs a reason why it'll stick. I think this'll do well as I'm in a SBCT and we're training for near-peer conflict, so a lot of the issues are things that I get to see and talk about regularly, from weapons to doctrine to planning and tactics. Also, it is pretty cool to do near-future...it's pretty much the same stuff we have now, but the potential for a few things to be better and no one can tell you it is wrong! They may have opinions on likelihood, but they can't say that it is wrong. This gives much of the freedom of an Imagi-nation without constructing something from the ground up.

Also, I'm enjoying micro armor. Yes, it is small, but there is still a bit you can do to spruce it up - and it costs about 1/4 as much and takes half as long to work with than 15mm, maybe less. It also fits nicely onto a small table, which is the vast majority of my gaming these days, even with several people.

Finally, the rules are coming together more and more, showing that the core mechanics are sound - the tricky part of balancing reality and playability is something that definitely comes about with playing, and I've more people than ever who are interested in all the modern warfare rules, including some veterans and veteran gamers. It's important that I have rules I like to play and that fit into my resources of time and energy.

All that being said, below is how things stand as of 02 FEB 18.

4,000 Views - Future plan...

http://www.scoop.it/t/funny-memes-and-pictures

Well, my plan may not be that cunning. Actually, it isn't cunning at all, but it's a great plan and I'm sticking with it! Anyway...in only four months, the visits have doubled from 2,000 on August 4th, 2015 when I posted the following goals:

  1. Finish draft of WWII Fast-play rules [inspired by Neil Thomas and his One-Hour Wargames].  Do a playtest, then post a batrep for a workable draft of the rules.  If ideas/concepts flop in execution, then just post what didn't work.
  2. Finish my Crusader Company.  This includes about 20+ tanks since it is a full-strength 16 tank company plus substitutions to use it from 41 thru 42-3.
  3. Paint up a platoon of Brit 25 pdrs and Brit motor company.  Then they will have almost as many options as my Italians, and I can stop proxying Italians in for the Brits.
Nice to see that what interests me interests others. The NT Rules have certainly gotten a lot of attention, and the new detailed AARs of Chain Reaction 2015 have certainly proven very interesting to lots of people. Special thanks to all who enjoy and share this Blog!

While Goal #1 has gone well, Goals #2-3 haven't been quite as fruitful. Hosting games and preparing for same competes with painting time, and it's a different sort of energy to sit down and paint altho I find it relaxing. Was also a bit discouraged at not finding info for British uniforms in the two Osprey books I bought. Finding "British Battle Insignia (2)" at Amazon for $5 got me moving though, and it arrived in the mail today! So I will be able to do a better job making my Motor Infantry a little bit colorful and interesting.

The Crud Company I pretty much have all the info on, I just need to sit down and do them. But since they can be played with "as-is" the priority is the motor infantry and 25pdrs as I could really use them on the table. This is a 15mm project, which seems a nice balance of detail and character, but portable and fitting onto many different table sizes.

Looking forward to fielding two full forces of British and Italians in the Western Desert, 1941! Both will have an infantry force and an armor force, with plenty of switchouts and alternatives. And there's plenty more in the collection. I can easily field another force of Italian infantry and another two squadrons of British tanks [Honeys and Cruisers].

Meanwhile, expect to see more on 2HW skirmish.  Mainly 28mm Star Wars WoC ppp at first, but some WWII is on the way as I acquired 2HW "Nuts!". I'd love to have 25mm WWII but am afraid of what will happen if I head down that route! Best to try it with 15s first and see how it goes. Nuts! looks very promising for developing Star Wars since most of the fighting resembles WWII and earlier levels of technology [at least the ground fighting, that is]. I own 25mm Old Glory Pershing v. Pancho Villa, and have a few modern 28mm Brits and Taliban by Empress [lovely figs!], but haven't gotten moving on those projects yet.

Finally, I've added a labels bar to the top left, and hopefully that will make the site easier to navigate and find what interests you.

Stay tuned, and feel free to make requests and suggestions!

2000 Views! Future Plans...

So real military work has kept me busy for most of this year.  Between preparing to leave and actually being activated, I haven't had much time for any gaming at all, not even able to bring Starfire II with me.  I contemplated it during packing, but a realistic understanding soon set in, and even the few microgames I brought with me have sat on the shelf for several months now.  Still, I know that people who follow blogs are interested in previews of coming attractions, so here goes.

Just before I left I was working on the 2nd draft of my modifications of the 1HW rules, and playing out scenarios with my WWII desert Brits and Italians.  Continuing in that direction, future posts will be:

  • Finish draft and do a playtest, then post a batrep for a workable draft of the rules.  If ideas/concepts flop in execution, then just post what didn't work.
  • Finish my Crusader Company.  This includes about 20+ tanks since it is a full-strength 16 tank company plus substitutions to use it from 41 thru 42-3.
  • Paint up a platoon of Brit 25 pdrs and Brit motor company.  Then they will have almost as many options as my Italians, and I can stop proxying Italians in for the Brits.
I'll be returning from active army in the fall, so expect some progress after September.  Until then, top off your petrol and keep your ammo racks full!

Expanded Direction and Focus

There's a limit to the number of blogs I can tend to, and I hate to see them being neglected.  Also, there's crossover interest on my part that may also be crossover interest for readers of this blog.  So this blog's focus will be expanded to my interest in the rules Chain Reaction 3.0 [free download from Two Hour Wargames] and Force on Force / Tomorrow's War.

The periods that interest me for both of these skirmish & squad level games is the Mexican Civil War and Pershing's Intervention, Modern Afghanistan, and near-future / Star Wars sci-fi gaming.  While I was tempted by 25mm WWII, I just felt that expansion into an additional scale was not wise at this time when I'm attempting to scale back on gaming [pun intended!].

So there will be a lot more variety on this blog, altho I'll continue to post pics and kick around ideas and resources for N. Africa in WWII, which is a favorite period of mine.  This will also result in more posts that will hopefully be of interest to readers.

First Post! Why 15mm North Africa WWII?

This blog will hopefully document the completion of  projects begun almost ten years ago - WWII desert forces for Flames of War in 15mm.  I think it was v.1 that got me started with the desert forces.  Most of the models weren't even made by BF at that point, and I had access to an Old Glory discount, so most of my models are Old Glory Command Decision pieces.  So the first question in my mind for a blog is always - WHY?

Well, when I was a kid someone gave me "Brazen Chariots" by Robert Crisp, the South African crickater and journalist.  It had an impact with its vivid first-hand account, personal details, odd events, and honest evaluation of both his own performance and that of the 'higher-ups'.  Ever since, I've loved the Stuart "Honey" and his book.

As for Flames of War, well, v.1 was "the" WWII miniatures game,10-15 years ago, and it certainly packaged WWII and made it playable. There were some brilliant mechanics, like relating Unit quality to Fire - it is easier to inflict damage on green troops than veterans. By imitating the Games Workshop model it brought WWII from the back of beyond, behind ancients and horse & musket, to a very popular period.

Unfortunately, by imitating the GW "Evil Empire" approach in terms of both gaming and marketing, thru v. 2-3 and now 4, they also created the same monster mix of power-gaming, special rules and units and drastically increased prices - and trying to force tournament players to purchase their stuff. Also, there continues to be a lack of realism that could be easily fixed, like no overwatch, etc. When I read Frank Chadwick's "First Battle" boardgames like "Team Yankee" and "Blood & Thunder" it's all so easy to correct. So like all Games Workshop games...Flames of War is dead to me now!

Still, there's lots of reasons to play this theater of war, if not Flames of War, anymore:
  • Interesting opponents and match-ups!  DAK don't fight like RE don't fight like 8th Army.  Each has their own play style, strengths and challenges.
  • Wild variety of equipment!  And if you're British, loads of it is on your side. If you're German, you capture lots if it at one point or another.
  • Tons of information, inspiration and great history in English.
  • Painting goes from very simple to very unusual camo and it's all historical.
  • Plenty of great models.
  • "War without Hate" as Rommel said.  As ugly as WWII often is, the desert war was without much of the horrors against civilians and generally the two sides respected each other and the rules of war.  Pretty much the polar opposite of the Eastern Front and the Pacific War.
  • The British Army alone fielded more national varieties in the desert than most nations fielded in the entire war.  The Italians also had some unusual units and equipment.  It's a front and time that's almost without standardization, and nearly anything can be fielded historically.
  • My local area has loads of 15mm North African armies.  Since I have both British and Italians, it's easy for me to get an historical matchup.
So basically, this is a no-brainer.

PROJECT GOALS
I've made a few attempts to finish my desert armies, but I keep buying more and don't sell unpainted stuff off so haven't gotten anywhere close - and I don't have any DAK yet!  If nothing else, I need to finish two complete sides so that I can host desert games with people who don't have any and want to try it out, and also so that I can demo with people and play either Axis or Allies historically [not a fan of blue-on-blue training games, really].

Period & Theater
My favorite battle is definitely EW with Crusader.  It's a knock-down drag-out fight between two evenly matched opponents and there's plenty to game here.  There are great MW fights at Gazala and the early Alamein battles, too. But they represent the end of the 'classical' desert war as the strategic situation turned against the Axis. It becomes more of a Mediterranean Theater as the US and British invade from the West.

So it's all good, but I need to focus on Crusader at least for now.

Companies The original project somehow became a Crusader [Crud] Squadron and a Carri Compagnia. This despite the fact that the Stuart Honey is one of my favorite tanks.  I dimly remember using playtest EW lists and my first forays into making desert terrain in the basement of the house I had with wife #1.  With the divorce, house sale, and all those transitions the armies suffered severe neglect. Also, I didn't like the CD Stuarts much, so swapped them with someone. Eventually, I got the very lovely BF Honeys but have to get going on them - a bit daunted by the Caunter camo, actually!

Round 2. Eventually I got into playing again and did some more work.  I finished a bunch of Italian platoons that were official in MW FoW v.2 rules, even playing a tournament with them.

THE Tournament.  My only tournament play, it was memorable for a match against a Russian infantry company with KV1 support, and the guy was really mouthy!  He basically dismissed any thought of losing as soon as he found out I fielded Italians.  Because since the Italians lost the war they should lose the game...?  Of course, I won the game.  I ignored his KV1s and instead focused on wiping out his infantry with loads and loads of MG dice, including those occupying a town.  Then I circumnavigated the board at high speed and seized an objective from his depleted army.  I think the hilarious thing about the "heavy tank mentality" is the gamers who assume that since they bought an unbreakable object that they simply must win.  The fact that FoW is a game based upon a point system, even fights, and carefully constructed missions seems to have been missed by them. Anyway...tournements and Flames of War thankfully in the past.

Round 3. More personal eventfulness lead to more neglect.  A second wife, a second house later, I was turning my attention to the Crud squadron - long overdue!  All went well until I was trying an ink wash with the models, and they game out way too dark.  Very discouraging.  Then job messiness had us relocating near my wife's family and job.  So the Cruds went back to the box with their problematic paint job.

I resurrected the Italians and did enough additions to them to field an Italian Compagnia Bersaglieri that was mostly driven by loads of gun teams and infantry with some tank support [tankette support, quite often]. It helped that a FLGS did an EW league and I was able to get the occasional game in there. Once I showed up with 17 platoons and had the opposition ready to quit after set up - he didn't really appreciate how poor most of the Units would fight, BUT FoW doesn't penalize shooting by low quality troops - they are just hit more easily, so you have to push them hard. Anyway, the league was somewhat hit or miss and the store difficult to work with, and v.3 was making FoW ever more complex.
Round 4.  Finally, I finished the paint job on the Cruds, cleaning, priming and basing some support platoons, and even playing a few games borrowing or substituting Italian gear as British.  Then...another move for a new job.  All back in the box, months in storage, spring and summer hiatus from FoW and most wargaming.

Round 5. Tally-ho!
